名分

めいぶん【名分】

〔本分〕 one's moral duty [obligations]; 〔正当性〕 (moral) justification; justice; 〔理由〕 a just cause. [⇒たいぎめいぶん]

●こちらには公共の福祉という名分がある. There is a just cause of public welfare at stake.

・戦端を開くには名分がないだろう. There would be no justification for a war. | We have no sufficient casus belli.

・野心だけでは戦争の名分が立たない. Mere ambition does not justify (the making of) war.
